•Is the rent prorated if you do not move in on the first of the month?
•When is the rent due and what is the penalty if rent is paid late?
•If it is a shared apartment, who is responsible for the rent? What is your share?
•What is included in the rent? (ie. Heat, electricity, gas)
•If a deposit is required, how much is it?
•Is it refundable?
•What is the maximum capacity of the apartment?
•Is there a charge for additional tenants?
•Are there charges for maintenance or janitorial services?
2. Terms of the Lease Agreement
•What is the required length of stay?
•Are academic breaks included in the lease?
•Who has the right to enter your apartment?
•Under what conditions can others enter?
•How will repair requests be handled?
•What notice is required to terminate the lease?
•Can you sublet? Under what conditions?
•Are there house rules regarding conduct or quiet hours?
3. Normal Wear and Tear
•Is there a written inventory of the apartment condition and/or furnishings prior to occupancy?
•Is there a cleaning fee?
•What are the charges for lock-outs or key replacements?
•What provisions are there for damages to the apartment?
NOTE: Students should consider purchasing Renters Insurance to cover their personal property and personal liability in occupying rental housing.
